Cupping therapy dates back to ancient cultures and is one of the oldest methods mentioned in medical textbooks as far back as 1,550 B.C. This deep tissue therapy involves applying silicone or plastic cups to specific areas of the skin in a way that creates suction to loosen muscles, increase circulation and draw out toxins that linger in the tissues. It can penetrate up to one inch into the muscle layer, getting to those DEEP knots and adhesions my elbows could not even get close to. By creating a vacuum inside the cup, it draws the skin and layers of muscle into the cup, which breaks up muscle knots. Experienced alone or coupled with massage, cupping reaches the more challenging areas such as IT bands and forearms that are chronically tight in most people.
